The automaker has been dealing with an outage that's affecting customers from accessing Kia's apps and other services.
Attacks using ransomware are not new, but what are they? Simply explained,
it occurs when a hacker or gang of hackers attacks a person or business and prevents them from using their systems to execute a task until they get payment.
Now, a significant one has happened in America, when Kia Motors America was the target of a $20 million ransomware assault,
which also included Hyundai North America. Just one day prior, Kia in the US experienced a widespread IT failure.
The Ransom Demands $20 Million From Kia Motors America
According to BleepingComputer, the DoppelPaymer ransomware group is responsible for the assault.
In a ransom note they generated, the group demanded $20 million from BleepingComputer in exchange for stopping their attack.
The attack's target, Hyundai North America, is identified through a link in the letter that directs users to a private victim page ..
on the DoppelPaymer Tor payment site. However, Kia's parent company, Hyundai, is not now impacted.
But that might quickly alter. According to the hackers, a significant quantity of data from Kia America has been stolen,
and if Kia does not bargain with them, they will reveal anything they have taken in two to three weeks.
